Even the most careful person in the world on the internet will have a run-in with a computer virus at some point. Most of the time, a sluggish computer is nothing more than the accumulation of cookies stored on your hard drive when surfing the internet. Cookies are small bits of a website that are stored on your computer to help the site load faster the next time you go to that site. Some of it can be used to track your surfing habits, interests and spending habits. This is known as spyware and adware. There are also cookie that are loaded with the specific intention of making your computer run slow, act strange and maybe even crash. This is known as malicious software, or Malware. Within each of these are several other categories and ranges of threats to your system. They are generally harmless, except for Malware. Please be aware when your system suddenly pops up with a warning when you are on a website and it says your system is infected. This is a common scare tactic that unscrupulous websites use to get you to download their software, and when you do, that IS the infection. Then you have to get their software and pay for it to remove the virus. The best thing to do, is to call a local computer service if you are not sure what to do. They can instruct you or help you with the proper course of action and generally save you some downtime, valuable files, possible damage to your system, and probably save you some money as well.
